Building Barley Relationships in the Sunny Part of the World

My recent journey alongside Montana barley farmer Lee Dahlman, as part of a delegation from the U.S. Grains Council, brought to light the profound importance of international collaboration and relationship building in the world of barley and malt trade. Our journey took us to Monterrey and Mexico City where we engaged in crucial discussions with key players in the Mexican brewing industry. The visits shed light on the profound significance of international collaboration and the value of bridging the gap between producers and end-users. Our core objective was twofold: to strengthen existing business connections and perhaps most importantly, to give U.S. Barley farmers an invaluable opportunity to meet those who consume their barley. 

One of the most impactful moments of our time in Mexico occurred when we sat across from some of the largest brewers in the world. It became immediately evident how essential our contributions were to them. Mexico imported nearly 1.4 million metric tons of barley and malt from the United States in 2022, showcasing the vital role we play in sustaining the Mexican brewing industry. In Mexico, beer transcends being just a drink; it’s a cultural cornerstone. The top players in the Mexican brewing scene are continually striving to meet rising demands, reinforcing the significance of supplying quality barley and malt to ensure the nation’s brewing tradition thrives. 

In addition, our journey allowed us to engage with the rising stars of the Mexican brewing world—craft brewers. This dynamic sector is poised to reshape the Mexican brewing landscape, and our conversations with these artisans unveiled exciting prospects for collaboration. By nurturing these relationships and sharing insights, our support for the growth of craft brewing in Mexico is mutually beneficial for Montana.  

We took a vital step by meeting with the USDA ATO offices in Monterrey and Mexico City to address the logistical challenges of sending barley via rail to Mexico. This meeting emphasized the importance of efficient transportation and logistics in maintaining the barley trade and its impact on the livelihood of Montana’s barley farmers. 

Visiting Mexico underscored the importance of international cooperation, highlighting the global impact of a Montana barley farmer’s work and how it nurtures fruitful partnerships, ensuring that the vibrant tradition of brewing in Mexico shall continue to flourish.
